The Story: Geoffrey Herd on Creating ATX Chamber Music and Jazz
ATX Chamber Music and Jazz was the result of several converging ideas and experiences. As a country, people are lonelier and more socially separated than ever, leading to tragic health consequences. Simultaneously, the reach of classical music and jazz are waning with many presenters struggling to connect with their communities across the country. Classical music in particular only reaches the tiniest minority of people in the United States in any meaningful way.
As I moved around the country for both school and work, I felt these issues personally. Particularly after leaving a collegiate setting, building a new social network was difficult, and I rarely found myself going to the concert hall to meet friends and have social experiences.
Fast forward a couple of years, and I found myself involved in two stunning house concerts that combined world-class musicians with intimate social settings. The results were incredible—a group of people deeply moved by classical music while experiencing an energetic social atmosphere. It was clear that a vital social element was missing from the classical concert hall. Chamber music at its roots used to thrive in these social settings, but this was largely formalized out of the concert experience during the 20th century.
We then had an idea: What if Austin, as the Live Music Capital of the World, gave birth to an innovative concert format that combined the artistry of the greatest living artists with engaging and stimulating social events—from whiskey tastings to cultural fairs to holiday celebrations and more?
The experiment worked brilliantly. In a short period of time, we have built an amazing community of concert-goers with guests from all backgrounds and generations. The atmosphere at the events is electric, and the support keeps growing. I believe our success sends a powerful message for our industry—one of connection, community, and cultural revival.
Our Mission
Our mission and inspiration are tied together. We aim to offer a new model of concert experience to both Austin and the country as a whole—one that builds community through socially-engaged musical events. By making Austin a regular stopping point for the world’s top classical and jazz artists, we create spaces where our community can join together and share in the communal experience of world-class music. When people refer to Austin as the Live Music Capital of the World, we envision our city being recognized not just for its vibrant popular music scene, but also as an epicenter for the performance of chamber music and jazz.

La Historia: Geoffrey Herd sobre la Creación de ATX Chamber Music and Jazz
ATX Chamber Music and Jazz fue el resultado de varias ideas y experiencias convergentes. Como país, la gente está más sola y socialmente separada que nunca, lo que conlleva trágicas consecuencias para la salud. Al mismo tiempo, el alcance de la música clásica y el jazz está menguando, con muchos organizadores luchando por conectar con sus comunidades en todo el país. Mientras me trasladaba por el país tanto por estudios como por trabajo, sentí estos problemas personalmente. Especialmente después de dejar el entorno universitario, construir una nueva red social era difícil, y rara vez me encontraba yendo a la sala de conciertos para conocer amigos y tener experiencias sociales.
Avanzando un par de años, me vi involucrado en dos impresionantes conciertos domésticos que combinaban músicos de talla mundial con entornos sociales íntimos. Los resultados fueron increíbles: un grupo de personas profundamente conmovidas por la música clásica mientras experimentaban una atmósfera social energética. Era evidente que faltaba un elemento social vital en la sala de conciertos clásicos. La música de cámara en sus raíces solía prosperar en estos entornos sociales, pero esto se formalizó en gran medida fuera de la experiencia del concierto durante el siglo XX.
Entonces tuvimos una idea: ¿Y si Austin, como la Capital Mundial de la Música en Directo, diese a luz un formato de concierto innovador que combinase la maestría de los mejores artistas vivos con eventos sociales atractivos y estimulantes, desde catas de whisky hasta ferias culturales, celebraciones navideñas y más?
El experimento funcionó brillantemente. En poco tiempo, hemos construido una increíble comunidad de asistentes a conciertos con invitados de todos los orígenes y generaciones. La atmósfera en los eventos es eléctrica, y el apoyo sigue creciendo. Creo que nuestro éxito envía un mensaje poderoso para nuestra industria: uno de conexión, comunidad y renacimiento cultural.

Nuestra misión e inspiración están unidas. Pretendemos ofrecer un nuevo modelo de experiencia de concierto tanto a Austin como al país en su conjunto: uno que construya comunidad a través de eventos musicales socialmente comprometidos. Al hacer de Austin una parada regular para los mejores artistas de música clásica y jazz del mundo, creamos espacios donde nuestra comunidad puede unirse y compartir la experiencia comunitaria de música de talla mundial. Cuando la gente se refiere a Austin como la Capital Mundial de la Música en Directo, visualizamos que nuestra ciudad sea reconocida no sólo por su vibrante escena de música popular, sino también como un epicentro para la interpretación de música de cámara y jazz.
